The Harbour

Titahi Bay residents would like the whole of Porirua Harbour to be  sustainable managed with
particular emphasize on silting, water quality, reducing rubbish, having safe access for families and the creation of a walkway from Onepoto to Porirua shopping district.

 

Likes

 

• Recreational use of the harbour e.g. waka ama, sailing, rowing, wind surfing and other water sports
• The look of the harbour
• The use of planting
• Bird life

 

Dislikes

 

• The pollution that goes into the harbour
• Seafood not suitable for consumption
• Rubbish along the waterfront
• Lack of parking
• Traffic along the causeway forms a barrier between the people and the harbour edge

 

Opportunities

 

• The harbour as a recreational resource
• Protecting and managing the coastal environment
• The harbour as a source of seafood

 

Concerns

 

• The harbour is unclean
• Sediment and stormwater run-off going into the harbour waters
• Deteriorating water quality
• Gradual silting of the harbour
• Collapsed boulders around the edges

 

Proposed Actions

 

Prepare a co-joint Porirua Harbour management and action plan with Ngati Toa,TBRA, Pauatahanui Inlet Trust, PCC, Wellington City Council (WCC) and GWRC to manage and improve the quality of Porirua harbour and reduce siltation (including dredging as a possibility to reverse this trend).

 

Link Onepoto Bay and Porirua City with a lit walkway/promenade.

 

Introduce measures to improve water quality in the harbour and counter the issue of siltation.

 

Remove rubbish from the shore of the harbour.
